The Sierra de las Quijadas National Park covers an area of 150,000 ha. In the past it was a region inhabited by the Huarpes Indians. It
has been verified the existence of pterosaurs or flying reptiles of 100
million years ago, having footprints of dinosaur footprints 120 million
years ago. It was created in 1991 to conserve
representative environments of the Chaco Arid and Mount, and to preserve
its archaeological and paleontological sites. One
of the reasons that influenced the choice of area was the existence of a
unique geological formation in the north center of the Sierras, called
Potrero de la Aguada. It consists of a huge
natural amphitheater surrounded by abrupt sandstone walls and reddish
colored agglomerates, in which erosion has carved the most capricious
forms.
