The
2nd World Conference on Oenological Tourism, the most important global
meeting of wine tourism, began this Friday in the city of Mendoza, with
the participation of the highest authorities of the World Tourism
Organization (WTO), national tourism and of the host province. During two days, some 500 experts in local wine tourism and many
countries will meet in the Angel Bustelo Auditorium, provincial capital,
to delve into the topics addressed at the conference, interact and
exchange ideas.
Some factors that helped Mendoza to be chosen as the venue for this second meeting are that it has been included since 2005 among the nine great capitals of the wine world and that the province is the most important in the country in winemaking activity: it produces 70 % of Argentine wine, with malbec as the star strain.
The Minister of Tourism said: "All Argentines are very happy because Argentina is represented by the province of Mendoza," and said that "the main elements that people are looking for are gastronomy but in particular wine." The head of the tourist portfolio pointed out that the word "malbec", the most representative variety of the country, "is searched on the Internet by Germans, Americans, Brazilians or Chinese, which shows that wine tourism has gained an extraordinary importance for the development of tourism Argentinian".
More and more international travelers are introducing themselves to wine-growing destinations, trying to understand stories and passion of each variety of wine and to enjoy its flavor and colors. Regarding Argentine wine production, the head of the UNWTO pointed out that from its beginnings , at the time of the colony, "has grown without stopping and today a new generation of winegrowers are producing some of the most delicious and competitive wines in the world.
